Wrong Traffic Challan? How to Dispute & Cancel Fake Fines Online
The ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras installed across Indian cities are highly error-prone. A speck of mud can make an "8" look like a "B", or a "C" look like a "G". Suddenly, a scooter rider's violation is billed to your SUV.
The system is broken, but you do not have to be its victim. You do not need to visit the local traffic police station, and you certainly do not need to pay a bribe to get it removed. You just need to know which digital levers to pull.
1. The Golden Rule: Never Pay Blindly
When you receive a challan SMS, your first instinct is to open Paytm or GPay and clear it to avoid penalties.
2. Step-by-Step: The Parivahan Dispute Method
Every single automated e-challan must be backed by photographic evidence. If the photo does not match your vehicle, the challan is legally invalid.
| Step | Action Required |
|---|---|
| Step 1: Download Evidence | Go to the central Ministry of Road Transport portal: echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Enter your vehicle number and chassis number to view the challan. Click the camera icon to download the photo evidence. |
| Step 2: Spot the Mismatch | Look closely at the photo. Is the vehicle model different? Is the color wrong? Is your vehicle a car, but the photo shows a motorcycle? Take a screenshot. |
| Step 3: File the Grievance | On the same Parivahan website, click on the "Grievance System" tab. Log in with your mobile number, enter your Challan Number, and upload the screenshot. In the description, clearly state: "Vehicle model and class do not match. The camera has misread the number plate. Request immediate cancellation." |
The backend traffic control room will manually review the image, realize the AI camera made a mistake, and drop the challan from your RC.
3. The X (Twitter) Escalation Hack
If the Parivahan portal is glitchy or you are not getting a response after 7 days, turn to social media. Indian City Traffic Police departments (like Bengaluru BTP or Delhi Traffic Police) are highly active on X (formerly Twitter).
Post the photo from the challan alongside a photo of your actual vehicle. Tag the official City Traffic Police handle and the Joint Commissioner of Traffic. Keep it polite but firm: "Dear @[City]TrafficPolice, received a faulty challan due to an ANPR camera error. The vehicle in the violation photo is a grey scooter, but my vehicle is a white car. Please rectify."
Their social media teams usually resolve visual mismatch errors within 24 to 48 hours and will reply to your post with the cancellation confirmation.
4. What if the Police Ignore You? (Lok Adalat)
If all digital avenues fail, do not worry. Let the challan sit unpaid. Eventually, the traffic department will send the unpaid challan to the National Lok Adalat (a fast-track dispute resolution court held every few months).
You can attend the Lok Adalat (or attend virtually in many states). When you show the judge the photo evidence proving the vehicle in the picture is not yours, the judge will instantly dismiss the challan without any legal fees or lawyers required.
