WhatsApp AI Voice Scams: How to Spot & Report Deepfake Extortion

How to spot and report WhatsApp AI voice clone scams and deepfake extortion using Sanchar Saathi Chakshu portal

🎙️ That Is Not Your Child Calling. It Is AI.

You receive a frantic WhatsApp call from an unknown number. You hear your child or spouse screaming, claiming they have been in a terrible accident or detained by the police. The "officer" on the line demands you instantly UPI ₹50,000 to drop the charges. Stop. Do not send the money. Scammers are now using 3-second clips from Instagram to clone voices using Artificial Intelligence. This is the new era of Fake News extortion, and here is how you dismantle it.

Misinformation is no longer just forwarded political text messages. It is highly personalized, weaponized AI designed to trigger your deepest fears and drain your bank account within minutes.

If you panic, the scammers win. You need to establish a family defense protocol and know exactly which government portals to use to hunt these syndicates down.

1. The Ultimate Defense: The Family "Safe Word"

AI can clone a voice flawlessly, but it cannot read your mind. The only foolproof way to instantly verify if a distress call is real or an AI deepfake is the "Safe Word" protocol.

Establish it Today: Sit down with your family and agree on a random, unusual word (e.g., "Jupiter" or "Yellow Mustang"). If you ever get a call from someone claiming to be your relative in trouble, interrupt them and ask: "What is the family safe word?" If the person on the other end stammers, threatens you, or hangs up, it is a 100% confirmed AI scam.

Always hang up immediately and dial your relative's original, saved mobile number to verify their safety.

2. Report the Call via Sanchar Saathi (Chakshu Portal)

Do not just block the number and move on. You must weaponize the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) system to destroy the scammer's infrastructure.

The DoT has launched the Chakshu facility under the Sanchar Saathi portal specifically to report suspected fraud communications.

  1. Go to the official portal: sancharsaathi.gov.in
  2. Click on the "Chakshu - Report Suspected Fraud Communication" tab.
  3. Enter the scammer's phone number, the date and time of the WhatsApp call, and describe that an AI voice clone was used for extortion.
  4. Upload a screenshot of the call log.

When you report this, the DoT's AI systems flag the scammer's number across all telecom operators. If multiple reports hit, they will permanently disconnect the scammer's SIM card and block the physical IMEI number of their smartphone, rendering their device useless.

3. The IT Rules 24-Hour Takedown Mandate

What if the "fake news" is a deepfake video of you, your family member, or even a prominent figure endorsing a fake stock market Telegram group?

Under the amended IT Rules, 2021, social media intermediaries (like Facebook, X, and Instagram) are legally bound to remove any morphed image or deepfake video within 24 hours of receiving a complaint.

  • Use the specific "Report" button on the social media post and explicitly select "Impersonation" or "Deepfake/Altered Media."
  • If the platform fails to remove it within 24 hours, you can escalate the issue to the government's Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) via the portal gac.gov.in. The GAC has the legal authority to force the platform to rip the content down.

Just like using the 1930 Cyber Helpline to freeze stolen funds, knowing the right portals ensures you are never helpless against digital fraud.
