How to Update Address in Aadhaar Card Online in 2026 (Step-by-Step)

Stop paying agents. Learn how to change your Aadhaar address from your mobile phone or laptop in just 5 minutes.

Important 2026 Rule Update

To update Aadhaar address online, your current mobile number MUST be linked to your Aadhaar card to receive the OTP. If your mobile number is not linked or you lost that old SIM card, you cannot do this online. You must visit a physical Aadhaar Seva Kendra to link your phone number first.

Whether you are shifting from a rented house to your own flat, or moving to a different city for an IT job, updating your Aadhaar address is the first thing you need to do. Without an updated Aadhaar card, you will face problems opening a new bank account, getting a broadband connection, or applying for a passport.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has made this process completely digital. You do not need to stand in long queues anymore. The online fee for this service is just ₹ 50.

1. Valid Documents Needed to Update Address

You cannot just type a new address and save it. You must upload a scanned copy or a clear photo of an official Proof of Address (PoA). UIDAI accepts over 40 different types of documents. Here are the most commonly used ones:

Document Type Important Conditions
Voter ID Card Must have your name and the new address clearly printed. E-Voter IDs are also accepted.
Electricity / Water / Gas Bill Must be in your name and not older than 3 months.
Passport Your passport address must match the new address you want on your Aadhaar.
Bank Passbook / Statement Must contain your photo, bank seal, and the new address. Passbooks from Post Offices are also valid.
Registered Rent Agreement Notary agreements are often rejected. It must be a registered rent agreement or lease deed.
Property Tax Receipt Must not be older than 1 year.

Note: If you do not have any document in your name (for example, if you just moved in with your spouse or parents), you can use the "Head of Family (HoF)" option. You will need their Aadhaar number and a document proving your relationship (like a Marriage Certificate or Birth Certificate).

2. Step-by-Step Online Process

Keep your valid address proof document ready on your computer (in PDF, JPEG, or PNG format). The file size should be less than 2 MB.

1 Login to myAadhaar Portal

Go to the official UIDAI portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Click on the 'Login' button. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code. Click 'Send OTP'. Enter the OTP received on your mobile and log in.

2 Select Address Update

Once you are inside your dashboard, look for the option named 'Address Update'. Click on it. Then select 'Update Aadhaar Online'.

3 Choose the Address Field

Read the instructions on the screen and click 'Proceed to Update Aadhaar'. On the next screen, you will see fields like Name, Date of Birth, Gender, and Address. Select 'Address' and click Proceed.

4 Enter Your New Address Details

You will see your current address at the top. Scroll down to the 'Details to be Updated' section. Carefully type your new "Care of" (Father/Husband name), House/Building number, Pincode, State, and District. Make sure the spelling exactly matches your proof document.

5 Upload Valid Document

Select the type of document you are providing from the dropdown list (e.g., Bank Statement, Voter ID). Click on 'View Details & Upload Document' to attach your PDF or image file.

6 Review and Pay ₹ 50

Review the English and local language translation of your new address. If it looks correct, tick the consent boxes and proceed to payment. You can pay the ₹ 50 fee using UPI (PhonePe, GPay), Credit/Debit Card, or Net Banking.

✅ Download Your Acknowledgement Slip

After successful payment, download the Acknowledgement Slip. It contains your Service Request Number (SRN). You can use this 14-digit SRN to track your update status on the UIDAI website. Usually, the address gets updated within 5 to 15 days. Once approved, you can download your new e-Aadhaar immediately.

3. Common Reasons for Rejection

UIDAI rejects thousands of applications every day. Avoid these mistakes:

  • Spelling Mismatch: If your rent agreement says "Sector 4" but you typed "Sec-4" in the online form, the system might reject it. Type it exactly as it appears on the document.
  • Expired Documents: Uploading a 6-month-old electricity bill will result in an instant rejection. It must be recent.
  • Blurry Photos: If the officer cannot clearly read the address or see the official stamp on your uploaded photo, they will reject it. Scan your documents clearly.
